Second Draft and Feedback

Image
Second Draft - Improvements Made - After participating in a focus group and receiving feedback on my first completed draft, I went straight back to editing to complete these improvements, hopefully making my documentary look more professional in the process. The main improvement I received several times was to get rid of the white noise in the background of most clips, as well as adjusting the volume levels throughout so that all clips were equal and one wasn't louder than the other, since for example, my ending interview was a lot quieter that the rest of my documentary at times, as well as different sections on different venues sounding completely different due to filming them all separately. Before this I hadn't actually changed the audio on Premiere Pro before as it never was necessary, so I researched and watched some tutorials on YouTube, allowing me to see the best way to do this, and it wasn't difficult at all therefore I was able to quickly make this improvement a...

Documentary First Draft and Feedback

Image
My first completed draft of my documentary:  Feedback (focus group):  Recap of Feedback - What did you like about the documentary? 'It's really well put together, I love that it was chronological for each place, really educational, now I know a lot more about live music and the bands that performed here, even if you didn't have videos you had photos, just really well put together.'  'I like the way you edited it, even without videos you were able to make the story come through, with the pictures you were able to educate people as a documentary should, the intro and outro have a nice pace, ending is very good for your professional practice.'  What could I improve on? ' You could fix the voices / vocals as there's lots of white noise in the background, you can remove it on Premiere Pro to make it sound better.' 'I agree on fixing the background noise is there is a lot of white noise, also maybe adding some background music quietly as some clips do...

Post Production - Editing

Image
Empire Coming to the conclusion that I am happy with how my script looks, but am continuing to make changes, I began editing my first venue section after my introduction - The Empire Theatre, Sunderland. Having previously had access to film at the venue back in January, I already had my own footage, and from here had to collect more - From old photographs of the venue itself, images of stars who have performed there, and even interviews sourced from online.     For a first creation I am happy with the outcome, but I will continue to develop the clip to ensure I can improve it for the final piece. I decided to open up the Empire section with footage from Sunderland on Film , which shows the building in what I assume is the 1950s with a crowd of people outside, which I felt was a nice opening since it is the only older piece of footage I can find of the venue - Since due to the time, there wouldn't be a lot of footage to look back on, perhaps just photographs. Afterwards ...

Production Diary - Filming at the Empire

Image
Some of the footage I recorded while at the venue -  This is an example of some footage that I was not able to use due to the camera being unsteady, due to not using a tripod. I was lucky in that I had enough footage to use, but to avoid this happening again and the outcome possibly being worse, I know that when I next come to film I will ensure I use a tripod, allowing my shots to be steady.   Furthermore, this is an example of footage I was able to use and featured in my documentary. When filming inside of the venue, I filmed anything and everything I could, as I would rather haver too much footage than too little, since this would mean I'd have to return to the venue to film some more, but this wasn't necessary. I tried to film a range of different camera shots to show range in my filming and production, and I am happy with the outcome, as I was able to film shots like wide angle shots of the whole venue, close up shots of things like the finer details around the Empire inc...

Production Diary - Interview with Tom Rees

Image
Interview with Tom During my second year of college I created a piece around 'Culture in the Digital Age', to which I created a short documentary, discussing the vinyl industry and how it was affected. I felt it would be interesting to include different opinions and viewpoints, especially from a musicians perspective. In saying this, I am lucky enough to have close contact with Welsh band Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, meaning I was able to ask frontman Tom some questions ( I, in a voiceover while showing their music videos, exclaimed his answers ) whereas this time around, I wanted to elevate this. So from here, I messaged Tom explaining my idea and asked if he would be interested in participating, and thankfully he said yes. Then we exchanged different days we would both be available, then waiting for the day to come. I was able to call Tom and record our interview, in which I asked questions that were relevant to the brief. Overall it went well, and having met Tom previously, it d...

Pre Production - My Script

First Draft Upon creating the first draft for my documentary, already there are a lot of things I know I need to improve on. I tried to create a script where everything would flow nicely, therefore when talking about Northern venues I tried to follow each section on in the best possible way, in that they would somehow link. Following this, I made sure to do my research to ensure everything I was saying was accurate - Being a Expository documentary, all of the information needs to be correct since the aim of my final piece is to inform my audience about our history in terms of venues and live acts who have performed here.  Under each section I have worked out the duration of how long it would take me to say, this way I was able to collect the images I have found and ensure there is enough footage to talk over - With the venues mentioned being from the 1950s, with one even opening in 1913, there is no video footage, which meant I had to find images from online, allowing me to speak ...

Pre Production - Personnel List

The personnel list only includes my name as I wanted to make this project something I completed purely on my own, allowing me to showcase my skills in different areas. Throughout working on the project, almost everything has gone to plan and I haven't faced any problems in which I couldn't overcome myself - I feel this may have been different if I had included more of my own footage, but due to me choosing a topic in which a lot of my footage would have to be sourced from online, this didn't cause any problems. With my experience from the years I have spent studying Media, I have been able to develop my filming and editing skills, meaning when it came to doing both of these things on my own, everything went to plan and went well.

Pre Production - Resource List

I firstly needed the DSLR camera to film inside of The Empire, and was happy with the footage, but if I were to go back and do something differently I would've taken a tripod to ensure the footage was more steady. I also used the camera and mic to record all of my voiceover's, which I believe went well as the audio came out clear.

My Pitch and Assessment

History of Live Music in the North East from EmmaWallace23 In my completed pitch, I discuss what my idea is and what I aim to include in my planned documentary. I go into depth on m y understanding of who my client is, as well as my potential audience - to which I will create a further survey to know more clearly.  My assessment and feedback  Pitch Assessment from EmmaWallace23 Upon receiving my feedback and what I had to improve on moving forward, I have since researched into existing products in depth and discussed how they will influence and inspire me when I come to create my own documentary.  Upon doing this I have researched into my audience, creating a survey to find out in further detail what they like and dislike, helping me in the process as I now know exactly who my audience are and what they want to see.

Analysis of Existing Products

Image
As I have decided to create a documentary which focuses all around the history of live music in the North East and the difference in it today, upon researching, I've been unable to find an existing documentary / short film which focuses on gigs in one specific place - as they all focus on perhaps a specific event or band, not the actual place in which it's taking place. While this stands, I did research into different music documentaries which in this case did focus on either an event in particular, a certain band, or even a music label.  Hitsville: The Making of Motown (2019) When it comes to music documentaries, I have always believed Hitsville: The Making of Motown to be one of the best. The documentary tells the story of the Motown label, from how it began to the late 60s. Something I admire about the documentary is that in a way it's very personal, as it involves some of the label's greatest artists including Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, and more, ...

Research Into Audience

Image
My target audience for this project are people of any gender, mainly between the ages of 16 and 24. While my project is based around the North East and its history, and a large majority of my audience will also be from here, I don't necessarily believe that they have to be, as they may be watching my documentary for educational purposes. When discussing psychographics, I believe that the best fit for the audience of my documentary would be Explorers - people filled with energy and individualism, who find importance in experiencing new things, and are typically students. They want to discover and learn, and take pride in perhaps being different to others. I think this is the best fit because I think I see myself as an Explorer, and I believe that my audience, in this case, would like to learn new things about our history and the modern day, all while enjoying the media.  Furthermore, when applying the social grade to my target audience, I believe that, a large amount being students ...

Research Into Client

Image
The client for this project is Sunderland Culture, who are holding a mixed media exhibition titled Who Am I?  and have asked young practitioners to explore and develop ideas for media work relating to the theme of regional identity, either in the form of a short film / documentary, print media, or a combination of the two.  Formed in 2016, Sunderland Culture is a registered organisation and charity, created to bring together Sunderland's most cultural assets and activities and realise the ambition of a city brimming with creative potential. Their main aim is to improve life for everyone in Sunderland through culture, while managing cultural venues and developing city-wide projects. Their venues include the National Glass Centre and Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Sunderland Stages, The Fire Station, Arts Centre Washington, and more, with a combined audience of over 700,00. As well as this, they run cross-city programmes, includ...
